[Class 90] [Also in Group IV] Gaseous, liquid or solid hydrocarbons are converted into lampblack and other substances such as hydrogen or hydrocarbons, e.g., methane, acetylene, benzene and naphthalene by making the substance to be treated an electrode across which and another electrode of like or dissimilar constituents, an. electric discharge is passed. The hydrocarbon to be treated may be mixed with coke-like filler and formed into an electrode, e.g., a mixture of coke and tar, which may be in the proportion of 80 per cent. petroleum coke and/or coal and 20 per cent. tar. The surrounding atmosphere may be free from oxygen.
