296,034. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 22, 1927. Carbonizing processes. - Coal, oil schists, &c. are heated with steam to produce a pyrogenic decomposition giving gases rich in olefines, which are then heated with or without pressure and with or without catalysts so as to produce liquid hydrocarbons of low boiling-point, which may be in part aromatic. In an example, brown coal or bituminous coal powder is carried by a current of steam through an iron tube at 800‹ C. After removing water, the gas percentage composition of the mixture is carbon dioxide 4 ethylene, propylene and butylene 20.6, carbon monoxide 13.4, hydrogen 40.8, methane 6.4 and nitrogen 14.6. It is passed over active carbon at 875‹ C., producing mainly benzene. Active or inert gases such as hydrogen or water gas may be mixed with the steam.
