Abstract
322,734. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 3, 1928. Hydrocarbons in general; pentane, propane, butane.-The products from the destructive hydrogenation under pressure of coal, tars, mineral oils, &c. are condensed under pressure and separated into various constituents by fractional release of pressure. The hydrogen first obtained my be purified from hydrocarbons by thermal decomposition or by treatment with steam, carbon dioxide, &c. in the presence of catalysts such as iron or nickel at 500‹-1200‹ C. and again employed in the hydrogenation process. The pentane, propane, butane, &c. produced by further release of pressure may be isolated by compression or strong cooling. Solvents or absorbents may also be employed for the further separation of the reaction products. The hydrogen may also be washed to remove hydrogen sulphide and hydrocarbons. In an example the gas is passed through a highpressure tower filled with Raschig rings against a counter-current of middle oil which is used in a continuous cycle and may be subjected to fractional release of pressure.
