Abstract
Comminuted coal to be destructively hydrogenated without the addition of liquids is mixed with residues, such as coke or ashes, obtained in the destructive hydrogenation, extraction under pressure, low or high temperature carbonization, or gasification of solid carbonaceous materials in such amount that agglomeration of the coal is prevented. Preferably 10 to 30 per cent of residues is added, and the coal is hydrogenated in layers not exceeding 5 cm. in depth. The residues may be impregnated with catalysts such as ammonium molybdate or tungstate, or tin oxalate.
