877,558. Fuel briquette. SOUTHERN WHARVES Ltd. Oct. 16, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1959], No. 32951/59. Class 50. A binder for briquetting coal slack or dust is produced from comminuted vegetable root or tuber material by mixing the comminuted material with an amount of an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution sufficient to gelatinize the mixture and then adding a quantity of a mixture consisting of equal parts of a 2% by weight sodium nitrate solution and a <SP>1</SP>/ 2 % by weight calcium chloride solution sufficient to prevent the binder sticking to the paddles of the mixing mill. Preferably ¢-4% by weight of a phenol/sodium hydroxide resin may be added to the binder. In an example, comminuted potatoes are treated with 8.5% by weight of sodium hydroxide in the form of a 20% by weight aqueous solution and after the addition of the sodium nitrate and calcium chloride solution 1% by weight of a phenol/sodium hydroxide resin is added. Briquettes made with the binder, e.g. by mixing with bituminous coal fines and compressing the mixture, are allowed to cure and harden. The curing may be effected by placing a briquette between two electrodes and passing through the briquette a pulse of alternating current.
