Abstract

402,139. Agglomerating fuel. ROBERTS, A., 236, South Coronado, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Feb. 23, 1932, No. 4081/33. Divided on 402,107. [Class 50.] An organic binder such as pitch and an inorganic binder of the nature of cement are distributed throughout a pulverulent fuel mass by water or an aqueous solution or suspension, 1“ times the weight of the binder when the fuel is fine enough to pass a screen of 30 meshes per linear in. and increasing in proportion as the fineness increases. The moulded briquettes are baked e.g. at 1000‹F for 30-90 minutes to render them smokeless. The fuel particles are of a size capable of passing a screen selected between 25-100 mesh and the inorganic and organic binders comprise in general not more than 5 and 7 per cent respectively of the total mass. A small quantity of sodium or potassium chloride, boric acid, borax or ferric oxide and flame colouring salts such as of strontium may be added, the fuel cement and organic binder being preferably mixed and the salt dissolved in the water and then worked into the mixture. The mass is suitably pressed at 2,000-10,000 lb. per sq. in. whilst at about 100‹-120‹ F, the preceding mixing being effected at about 180-250‹ F or not exceeding 400‹ F if the fuel itself includes organic binding material. Oxidizing agents or ignition accelerators such as copper or ferric oxide or boric acid may be applied to the briquette surfaces. The fuel material may comprise coal, coke, petroleum coke, lignite, peat, sawdust and spent tan bark. In an example a mixture of 81.5 parts of coke of 30 mesh with 1 part of cement, 7 parts of asphalt, .5 parts of sodium chloride and 10 parts of water is briquetted at 3000- 7000 lb. per sq. in. Specification 402,107 is referred to.
