Abstract

414,367. Agglomerating fuel. ROBERTS, A. A., Imperial House, Kingsway, London. Oct. 26, 1932, No. 29982. [Class 50.] In briquetting powdered coal liable to swell when burnt, the proportion of volatile carbon in the overall amount of powdered coal briquetted is reduced and boric acid not exceeding 1 per cent by weight is added. The reduction in volatile content may be effected by heat and passage therethrough of combustion products or by the addition of coal from which volatile material has already been driven off. The moulding pressure may be in excess of that necessary to maintain coherence and the coal reduced to very small particles. In an example 80 per cent of Kent coal is mixed with 20 per cent of ocean coal or coke, and in addition to a cement binder, with À5 per cent each of boric acid and sodium chloride, the mixture being moulded at 6000 lb. per sq. in. in order completely to obviate swelling. The Provisional Specification describes the utilization of carbonaceous material such as coal, coke, sawdust, tan bark, peat, lignite, anthracite and carbonaceous residuums.
