832,631. Fuel. CELLAN-JONES, I. May 14, 1957 [May 18, 1956; Oct. 25, 1956; Dec. 24, 1956; Feb. 21, 1957], Nos. 15618/56, 32591/56, 39201/56 and 5930/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 50. A solid fuel is produced by heating a lump of combustible material, such as coke, peat, lignite or wood, and applying pulverized coal on to the heated lump so as to fuse the coal thereon and provide a coating. A lump is defined as a piece of material having a size not less than half inch grading. The pulverized coal may be applied to the heated lumps as they pass from a rotary retort, or the coal may be applied whilst the lumps are in the retort. In a modification, a horizontal cylindrical retort is employed which is externally heated to 700‹ C. and coke is moved through the retort by paddles on a rotary shaft. The pulverized coal, which may be of low grade, is fed in, between the ends of the retort, and any which does not adhere to the coke is discharged and extruded or compressed to provide a saleable product.
