A high-density, low-reactivity coke is made by loading a cell of a conventional coke oven simultaneously with briquettes made from small coal and an amount of non-briquetted small coal not exceeding the weight of briquettes and carbonizing the small coal/briquettes mixture in the usual manner. Small coal is defined as having a particle size less than 3 mm. The small coal may be dried before being loaded into the coke oven, and the small coal/briquettes mixture in the coke oven may be subjected to the action of vibrating needles. Examples are given.
