Abstract

1,249,744. Carbon. MARATHON OIL CO. 27 Aug., 1969 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 42620/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] Calcined coke has whisker-like carbon filaments extending from its surface, the carbon having a highly crystalline graphitic structure. The method of making the coke comprises calcining coke, which has been at least partially coated with a liquid hydrocarbon, in a quiescent bed while it is supported on a plane hearth, so as to release vapours which are at least partly combusted. The coke may be derived from coal, pitch or petroleum, and is preferably a delayed petroleum coke. The liquid may be a tar, gas oil, fuel oil, cycle oil or a reduced crude, and should have a flash point above 100‹ F. The process, which may be at temperatures ranging from 1800‹ to 3500‹ F., may be performed in the apparatus described in U.S.A. Specification 3,227,627, modified by the addition of an oil supply pipe.
