Abstract
Crushed coal and/or lignite is coked by the method described in Specification 964,574, but the aromatic solvent used has cut points (at 1 atmos.) of from 315 DEG C. to 482 DEG C. (i.e. 600 DEG F. to 900 DEG F.). The preferred solvent includes phenanthrene (b.p. 340 DEG C.), and its homologues but other polycyclic aromatic solvents derived from catalytic and thermal cracking of petroleum or from coal tar pitch may be used. The flow diagram of the process is identical with that described in Specification 964,574, and apart from the solvent, the methods are the same except for minor temperature differences at which the coal &c. is mixed with the solvent. Two coking methods are referred to: (a) delayed coking as shown in the Figure, and (b) contact coking in which the feed flows downwardly with a particulate material.
