Abstract

242,621. International Combustion Engineering Corporation, (Assignees of Runge, W.). Nov. 6, 1924, [Convention date]. Coking processes.-Pulverized coal is preheated by suspension in a hot oxidizing gas and then carbonized by being showered through an ascending current of gas at a higher temperature. By preheating in air at a temperature of about 650‹ F. the agglutinating properties of bituminous coal are destroyed and the powdered fuel is then carbonized by being passed through the ascending combustible gas at a temperature of about 1000‹ F. Dried powdered fuel is showered by a device 7 into a preheating retort 9, the air for which is heated in a coke cooler 29, and, if necessary, a heat interchanger 32 before being delivered into the bottom of the retort, and, if desired, into a jacket 37 surrounding the retort, the resulting gases escaping by an outlet 12. The preheated powdered product is supplied by a conveyer 13 and feeder 15 to the top of a retort 17 in which it meets an ascending current of combustible gas heated in a heat interchanger 28, this gas being supplied if desired to a jacket 40 and direct to the carbonizing zone by a pipe 41. The distillates are led by a pipe 21 to a purifying apparatus 22 and gas holder 23 from which a pipe 26 leadsto a burner 27 and a pipe 25 to the heat interchanger. A controlled amount of air may be admitted to the carbonizing retort as described in Specification 242,622. The powdered coke is transferred to a cooler 29 in which it is utilized to preheat the air for the preheating retort.
