Abstract

263,785. Urbana Coke Corporation, (Assignees of Parr, S. W., and Laying, T. E.). Jan. 2 1926, [Convention date]. Retort furnaces; charging and discharging; cooling discharged materials.-In the coking of solid fuel such as coal, the fuel is preheated without exclusion of air in a container by waste flue gases before being passed through a rotary retort in which further heating takes place, the fuel then being coked in vertical retorts, the hot flue gases from which are passed in turn through a jacket surrounding the rotary retort and through the preheating device. The temperature of the rotary retort is controlled by a burner responsive to the temperature of the fuel leaving the retort. The fuel is fed into a preheating container 18 through which pipes 19, traversed by hot waste flue gases from a pipe 20, pass, and is supplied by a screw conveyer 10 rotating in timed relation to a rotary drum or retort, 25 to one end of the latter. This drum is enclosed in a heating chamber 26<1> traversed by hot gases entering by a pipe 16 and leaving by the pipe 20 and is so mounted that its angle of inclination may be varied by a jack 36. The temperature of the drum is maintained constant by a gas burner 30 controlled by a regulating device 32 and a thermo-couple 33 responsive to the temperature in a discharge hopper 11 so that the fuel is maintained at a temperature of 30‹ C. below that at which it becomes plastic. The fuel is discharged into a car 12 mounted on a track 40 supported on a transverse track 41 to permit of charging the vertical retort battery 13 below. The retorts 44 are enclosed in a chamber 45 heated by gas burners 47 at the bottom of up flues 51 leading to down flues 52 discharging the hot gases through passages 53 into contact with the retorts, the. walls 48 being thus heated to radiate heat uniformly. The hot gases pass out through a manifold 55 communicating with the pipe 16. The air for the burners is admitted through passages 72, 63 and preheated in flues 64, 65 leading to passages 67 below the burners, valves 68, 69 controlling the supply of air to the heating passages and to the passage 67 respectively. The coke is cooled in a reservoir 14 provided with passages 70 in which air is preheated before reaching the burners. A vent 74 connects the gas outlets 73 and leads to the main the gas and ammonia from steaming the coke.
