Producers. -- A process of making water gas consists in first storing up heat in chamber containing brickwork or the like and then passing powdered carbonaceous materials and steam through the chamber. Air from a blower J and powdered fuel from a hopper H are supplied by a burner C to a combustion chamber A from which the hot gases pass through a reaction chamber B having tortuous passages formed by diamondshaped webs b<4> which permit any unconsumed carbon or ash to fall back into the chamber A. The chamber B is heated by the combustion products which pass to an outlet E leading to a steam boiler F. During gas making, steam from the boiler F is heated in passages D and passes with the powdered fuel into the chamber A and up through the heated reaction chamber B in which water gas is generated and from which it passes by the outlet E to a cyclone separator G and conduit g<2>. Any unconsumed carbon passes through a pipe g<1> to the main fuel hopper H. Two generators adapted to work alternately may be provided. The water gas may be used directly for distilling by internal heating bituminous materials for the production of towns gas. Air may be admitted with the steam whereby carbon dioxide and nitrogen are formed, the carbon monoxide present being converted catalytically to carbon dioxide in the presence of steam, hydrogen being set free. The whole of the carbon dioxide is then removed and a gas mixture containing 25 per cent of nitrogen and 75 per cent of hydrogen suitable for the synthetic production of ammonia, is obtained.
