Abstract
17,436. Soc. per l'Utilizzazione dei Combustibili Italiani, and Civita, D. July 31. Peat, preparing.-Peat for use in a producergas installation is dried by subjecting it, after a partial drying by pressure, or by comminution and storage, to a current of hot gases, which may be obtained by combustion of the producer gas, and are preferably mixed with air. The freshly-dug peat is broken in a Kraus machine, partly dried, and spread in lumps about the size of a fist on wire-gauze trays in trucks b. These trucks are passed through brickwork tunnels a of cross-section slightly larger than that of the trucks, and are treated at one end of the chamber or tunnel to a mixture of hot air products of combustion, at a temperature of about 105‹ C., supplied by the main c, pipes d, flues e, and ports f in the walls between the tunnels. The trucks travel in a direction opposite to that of the hot gases, from which the whole of the heat is not removed, the remainder being used to raise steam for the producer blast. The mixture of hot gases issues from the end of the chamber carrying a larger proportion of water than that required to saturate the gases at their temperature.
