501,351. Coke ovens. OTTO & CO., GES., DR. C. Aug. 25, 1937, No. 23313. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1936. [Class 51 (ii)] In a vertically-flued coke oven the charging- openings b are equally spaced along the length of the oven and are symmetrically positioned in relation to the adjoining heating-flues, the arrangement being such that the flues of the heating-wall can be regarded as forming two groups, viz. : one associated with the charging apertures, and one with the spaces between these apertures, so that additional heat can be supplied to the intercharging-aperture spaces to compensate for the reduced conductivity, to heat of the larger sized pieces of coal which tend to collect there. In the heating-wall shown, there are eleven " twin " flues, of which five flues h are positioned symmetrically in relation to the apertures b while the remainder i correspond in position with the intercharging- aperture spaces. Where the burners k are arranged to project above the soles of the heating-flues, the burners for the flues i may be higher than those for the flues h, and where mixing devices for lean gas and air are employed at the lower ends of the flues, those used for the flues h may be less effective than those for the flues i.
