Abstract
519,675. Continuous-furnaces. BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., and LOBLEY, A. G. Sept. 21, 1938, No. 27495. [Class 51 (ii)] In a furnace in which a charge is passed continuously through a heating or cooling chamber air or gas currents are caused to flow by forced circulation in opposite direction through different portions of the heating or cooling chamber so as to produce a pressure substantially atmospheric at each end thereof. Fig. 1 shows a heating chamber a of a continuous electric furnace with a fan e at the centre drawing gases through ports e<2> at each end of the furnace and through passages h having electric or other heating means for the gases and discharging them at the centre through a port f. Dampers k control the gases. Fig. 2 shows a cooling chamber b. The fan e<1> drives gases from the ends of the chamber through ports f<2> and passages having cooling tubes and delivers them at the centre of the chamber b through a port f<1>. Instead of one fan being used at the centre a fan may be placed at each end of the heating or cooling chamber.
