Abstract

931,111. Heat recuperators. BROWN FINTUBE CO. Feb. 1, 1961 [Feb. 8, 1960], No. 3792/61. Class 64 (3). In a recuperator in which air or fuel gas flows through bayonet-type heatexchange elements 23 which are heated by flue gases, the elements comprise an inner tube 50 open at both ends and an outer tube 51 closed at the lower end 65 and having a smooth external surface, and longitudinal heat transfer fins 57 fixed to and extending from one or both of the tubes 50, 57 into the annular peripheral space between said tubes to a point in close proximity to the surface of the other tube 51, 50. As shown, the tube 50 is connected to an upper compartment A and the outer tube 51 to a lower compartment B. Cold air, impelled by a fan, enters the compartment A via the duct 45 and circulates down the inner tube 50 and up the space between the tubes and then enters the lower compartment B before being discharged through the duct 35. A base-plate 30 lined with heat-insulating material 48, seals compartment B from the fluid gases and is fixed to end walls 31 and 32 which are lined with heatresistant material 34. The partition 37 seals the two compartments A and B. The recuperator unit 20 may be lifted by means of the brackets 39, and rings 46 are used to lift the housing 40 off the partition 37, while rings 47 lift the partition 37 and elements 23 from the lower structure. The heat-exchange elements nearest the entry flow of the flue gases may have shields mounted on them to protect them from the direct blast of the gases.
