Abstract

1,007,499. Thermal regenerators. DIDIERWERKE A.G. Jan. 25, 1963 [Jan. 26, 1962], No. 3309/63. Heading F4K. In a regenerative heat exchanger such as a Cowper stove having checkerwork incorporating hot gas passages therein, additional heat transfer surface is provided by inserts 9 of metallic, ceramic or other material having relatively large heat transfer and storage characteristics as compared with the checkerwork, extending for only a limited distance into the passages at the hot gas outlet ends thereof. The inserts are preferably made of cast iron and each may comprise short sections 9a, 9b, 9c &c. arranged end to end. In a hot blast stove with vertical gas passages the elements are detachably supported on the grid on which the checkwork is normally mounted. The inserts may comprise rods or tubes each surmounted by a helically wound spacing strip. Alternatively the cross-sectional shape of the inserts may be cross-shaped (Fig. 3), star-shaped or rectangular.
