Abstract

798,108. Regenerators. SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER AKTIEBOLAG. March. 9, 1956 [March 14, 1955], No. 7420/56. Class 64(1) A regenerator through which hot and cold gases are passed in counterflow has a rotor comprising a portion 62 made up of refractory ceramic material and a portion 60 made up of metallic material. The portion 60 comprises an annular series of baskets 64 subdivided by members 80 provided with anchoring means for bars 86 on which regenerative plate elements 88 are supported. The members 80 and the radial and end walls of the baskets 64 are of double-walled construction and have upwardly extending flanges 102, 104 and 106 between which the corresponding walls of the refractory portion 62 of the rotor are seated. Gratings 110 provided on the portion 60 support ceramic tubes 108 packed edgewise into compartments 98 of the portion 62. Brackets 132 on the portion 60 rest on a bearing 112. Fig. 5 shows an alternative construction in which the lower portion 164 of the rotor comprises a structural framework serving solely to carry the upper portion 166 which is built up of refractory tiles 182 joined by rabbets 184, U-irons 174 being welded to the portion 164 to receive the tiles. A post 188 may be provided to support an arch 32 which separates the two gas streams and has inclined surfaces 44 to provide sector shaped ports 46, 48 aligned with similar ports 20, 22 in an end plate 18. The arch which forms part of a casing made of insulating refractories 16 supported by a structural framework 12, includes two steel beams 38, 40, cooled by air circulated through channels 158, 160. Radial seals 156 and peripheral seals 146, 150 and 154 consisting of a multiplicity of leaves of soft and malleable metal are provided. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 733,728.
