Abstract
684,797. Rotary regenerative heat-exchangers. AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTROMS ANGTURBIN. Nov. 3, 1950 [Nov. 4, 1949], No. 26845/50. Class 64 (i) Relates to rotary regenerative heat-exchangers in which the rotor includes a rotor post 12 connected to a circular rotor shell by radial partitions 11 which divide the rotor into sector-shaped compartments containing heat-transfer material. According to the invention the heat-transfer material at the "cold" end of the rotor comprises monolithic or integral, sectorshaped masses 33 disposed within said compartments and extending from the outer ends thereof inwardly to the rotor post, the masses being provided with a plurality of fluid passages 34 extending therethrough in a direction generally axially of the rotor. Preferably each compartment contains a single monolithic mass but for convenience in handling the mass may be made in two or more separate parts. The passages 34 may be rectangular (Fig. 4) or circular (Fig. 2) or of any other shape. In the form shown each mass 33 is provided at its outer arcuate end with a solid metal plate 36 which, when the mass is positioned in the rotor, forms a closure for openings in the rotor shell through which the masses are inserted or withdrawn from the rotor for cleaning. The masses 33 are made of corrosion resistant material e.g. cast iron. Other masses 50 (Fig. 8) similar in form to the masses 33 but of heat resistant material may be provided at the "hot" end of the rotor, the main body of heat-transfer material consisting of pebble shaped or other loose types of material supported by grids 52.
