Abstract
514,337. Ingot-heating furnaces. MORTON, W. A., and SPENCER, H. F. May 3, 1938, No. 13197. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] In a furnace of the kind described in Specification 491,814 for heating ingots 7 grouped about a central firing port 16 in the pit 1, and having separate recuperators 11, 14 for heating the combustion air and gaseous fuel, heating gases which have passed through the tile air recuperators and are partly cooled are mixed with the heating gases entering the metal gas recuperators. The heating gases now downwards through the recuperators 11 to a chamber 18 and pass either to an outlet flue 19 or to a pipe 20 leading to the heating gas inlet chambers at the top of the recuperators 14. A damper. 20a controls the flow through the pipe, and the delivery of the partly cooled gases to the recuperators 14 may be cut off by a damper 33 and the gases may then be taken through conduits 22 to the air passages of the recuperators 11. The preheated gaseous fuel may be mixed in the supply passages 13 with unheated fuel entering through passages 15. In a modification, the heating gases taken to the inlets of the gas recuperators are led through shortened sections of the air recuperators.
