Reverberatory furnaces.-In a gas-fired furnace for reheating iron &c., the air supply for combustion is heated in passages beneath the hearth and in the walls of the working and combustion chambers. As shown in Fig. 2, air, admitted through regulable openings C, H to a flue E in the throat of the furnace, passes through conduits I, I<1>, M to flues P beneath the floor of the combustion chamber, and is delivered thence through openings in the crown to mix with gas supplied from conduits A, B. The waste gases from the furnace may be utilized for raising steam in a boiler U.
