11,570. Eldred, B. E. June 2. Settings &c.-A, long slow-burning flame is produced in the furnace by the method of combustion described in Specification No. 17,197, A.D. 1901, [Abridgment Class Furnaces &c.]. In order to prevent the premature cooling of this flame by contact with the boiler-shell, a refractory heat-retaining surface 8 is -placed beneath the boiler, and in some cases air-jets 20, so directed as to blow the flame away from the boiler, are used. These jets direct the hot gases against the reverberatory surfaces 23, 24 formed in the flue.
