Abstract
26,762. Smallwood, A. Dec. 10. Smoke - consuming ; baffles. - In marine and similar boiler furnaces having a vertical chamber between the furnace and the smoke-tubes, a lining formed of fire - brick on a metal backing is fitted a short distance away from the rear wall of the combustion chamber. Baffles are provided to cause the furnace gases to take a longer path on their way to the smoke-tubes. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the products of combustion are directed by an inclined baffle B on to a vertical plate A at the rear of the combustion chamber, and are prevented from passing directly to the smoke-tubes by a second metal and fire brick baffle C. The latter may be inclined, or may extend from the lower end of the baffle A as indicated in dotted lines. The furnace tube may be fitted with a lining D near the fire-bridge. In a modified arrangement, the baffles B, C are omitted and the lining D is extended horizontally into the combustion chamber.
