[Cognate Application, 16,290/11.] Smoke, consuming.-In a steam-boiler or other furnace, combustion products are returned to the front and delivered over the fire, and the apparatus employed includes a special form of grate, arrangement of furnace, and construction of front. The space beyond the grate, which is closed off from the ash-pit by a plate H, communicates by pipes J, under and at either side of the grate, with apertures M in the dead-plate, and smoke &c. is drawn through the pipes J by steam-jets R<1>. The cross-section of the grate changes from flat at the front to arched at the rear, the effect being to drive the smoke towards the sides and therefore into the neighbourhood of the inlets to the pipes J. Castings P containing controllable air-inlet passages form the tops of the upwardly-inclined passages for the smoke &c. issuing from the apertures in the dead-plate. A hanging wall T and upstanding wall S are fitted at the rear of the grate.
