Abstract

22,559. Prinsep, R. S. Oct. 19. Pulverulent-fuel furnaces.-In a furnace burning powdered fuel, the accumulation of ash, dust, or soot about the flues, boiler, or water-tubes, is prevented by fitting baffles or steps so as to reduce or graduate the combustion chamber in a rearward direction. In the furnace shown in Fig. 2, a mixture of fuel and air from a fan feeder e impinges against a baffle a and a bar a', and only the hot gases pass over the bridge c. A lining of refractory material b<Î> extends along the roof of the furnace to the first baffle and along the floor to the bridge. When this arrangement of baffles is applied to a water-tube boiler, the gases may be conducted through side chambers from the back to the front end of the furnace, whence they are delivered among the tubes of the boiler. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the roof of the combustion chamber is formed in steps, and the gases are passed through a chamber b<Î> arranged on the top of the furnace.
