532,945. Carbonizing process and apparatus. ILLINGWORTH, S.R., and HUGHES, M. E. Aug. 1, 1939, No. 22309. [Class 55 (i)] Fuel briquettes or ovoids are heated so as to produce skin hardening by partial combustion of the volatiles given off in a controlled air supply, the briquettes being heated in layers in an horizontal oven having a stationary or moving hearth. As shown, the charge from a shaping press is fed by a conveyer 3 to a moving hearth 5 driven by an hexagonal roller 6, and supported on a roller 7 at the inlet end, cross beams 9 and skidder bars 8 providing intermediate supports. One or more transverse burners 15 are provided at the inlet end, and air to support combustion is admitted through inlets 19 and through auxiliary ports 20, a damper 22 in a stack 21 controlling the air supply. The carbonized product is discharged at 18 into a water seal. Specification 533,988 is referred to.
