Abstract

1474183 Coking agglomerates ASSOCIATED PORTLAND CEMENT MFRS Ltd 1 Aug 1974 [1 May 1973] 20580/73 Heading C5E Formed coke is produced by continuously feeding agglomerates, comprising powdered coal and produced by agglomeration without being subjected to a temperature or rate of heating such as would bring the coal to its plastic stage, on to a downwardly moving bed in a unitary kiln in which the agglomerates are heated by an upwardly moving stream of substantially oxygen-free gas obtained at least partly by the combustion of volatile products evolved from the agglomerates in the bed with the substantially stoichiometric proportion of air. Powdered coal 8 is pelleted at 14, e.g. to a diameter of 15-50 mm., after the addition of water 12 and if necessary sulphite lye, starch or bentonite as binder. The pellets are heated in the kiln 19 to a carbonization temperature in the range of 700-1200‹ C. by heat exchange with gases produced by burning a gas 22 in the combustion chamber 21 and cooled at 24. A friable outer layer can be removed from the pellets by tumbling at 26, leaving a metallurgical quality coke, and recycled through lines 27 and 10. The gas 29, containing volatile products from the bed, is cooled by water sprays at 30 to produce the clean gas 22. The kiln 19 can be an annular kiln of the type described in Specification 1,059,149.
