Abstract

<PICT:0948028/C3/1> A method of carbonizing fuel, e.g. coal, comprises passing it through a zone 2 where it is preheated, e.g. to 300 DEG C., then through a zone 3 where it is carbonized, e.g. at 470 DEG C., and finally through a cooling zone 4 which is supplied with cooling gas (at 9), a portion of the cooling gas being passed on to zone 3 and the rest of the cooling gas being passed directly to the zone 2 (via parts 10 . . . 13), heating gas being delivered (at 8) to the zone 3 where it combines with the cooling gas passed thereto. The major portion of the cooling gas is passed to the zone 3, and air may be introduced into the portion delivered to the zone 2 to assist oxidation therein, e.g. where coals of high caking qualities are used.
