Abstract

An apparatus for producing coke, gas and tar from coal comprises three reactors 3, 7, 9, in series, each adapted to operate on the fluidized bed technique, the first, 3, for preheating and, if desired, oxidizing the coal to a temperature, e.g. 300 DEG to 400 DEG C., which is below the initial burning temperature of the coal, the second, 7, for carrying out low temperature carbonization (at 500 DEG to 700 DEG C.), and the third, 9, for carrying out high temperature carbonization (at 700 DEG to 800 DEG C.). Air or oxygen from an external source is supplied to the bases of the reactors 7, 9 at 8, 13, the air for reactor 7 being preheated at 14 by poor gases from the reactor 9 which are burnt, with air, in chamber 16 and the combustion products delivered to the base of the reactor 3. Cooled powdered coke is collected at 20 and rich gas led off at 11 for purifying and removal <FORM:1012198/C4-C5/1> and recovery of tar. Heat for reactors 7, 9 is provided by the partial combustion of coal and semi-coke respectively in the reactors.
