Abstract

Carbonaceous solids including coal, coke, peat, tar, sands and oil shale which disintegrate when reduced to ash are distilled, carbonized and gasified in a fluidized bed process which comprises distilling the solids in a first bed fluidized, e.g. by steam and recovering the product gases, gasifying the partially combusted solids in an air fluidized primary gasification zone to a carbon content not below <FORM:1017527/C4-C5/1> 5%, recirculating part of the partially gasified solids to the distillation zone as source of heat therefor, and further gasifying the remaining solids in a secondary gasification zone fludized with steam and oxygen to yield water gas and ash with carbon content below 1%. The temperatures of the distillation and primary and secondary gasification zones are 500-600 DEG C., 800-900 DEG C., 900-1000 DEG C. respectively. In the Figure oil shale is treated successively in 10 the initial reactor, 20 the primary gasifier, 30 the secondary gasifier and optionally 40, 50 heat recovery units; raw shale, preferably preheated by flue gas, recycled solids from 20 at 800-900 DEG C., and steam are introduced into 10 and carbonization at 500-600 DEG C. is effected; steam and gaseous products are withdrawn at 12 overhead and reacted solids removed at 14 are suspended in air and passed into 20, optionally with added air from 24; in 20 partial gasification at 800-900 DEG C. to a carbon content of at least 5% is effected, the withdrawn flue gas being used to generate steam to preheat fresh oil shale, and part of the solids being recycled to 10 as indicated; remaining solids from 20 are passed to 30 further gasified with a mixture of oxygen and steam at 900-1000 DEG C. to give water gas at 36, suitable for use in ammonia and methanol synthesis, and ash of carbon content less than 1%. The hot shale ash from 30 may be passed into heat recovery system 40, 50 in which low temperature steam is superheated and water is vaporized; cooled ash is discharged through 58.
