Abstract

A process for treating coal particles to produce volatiles, e.g. acetylene and ethylene, and char, comprises heating the particles to above 700 DEG C. (temperatures of 900 DEG , 1100 DEG and 1325 DEG C. are mentioned) for a total heating period of less than 1 second, e.g. 0.2 second, in a region closed to the atmosphere, and rapidly cooling the volatiles and char to at least 500 DEG C. and preferably to less than 200 DEG C. The particles, which may be preheated to 350 DEG C., fall under gravity through an electrically heated furnace, or may be entrained in a carrier gas, e.g. recycled volatiles, and cooling is effected by a water-cooled catchpot. A pump removes the volatiles from the catchpot and delivers them through a filter to a storage vessel, the pump maintaining a pressure of less than 30 mm. in the furnace and catchpot.
