Abstract

301,775. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 1, 1927. Coking processes.-A gas rich in olefines is produced from bituminous coals, such as brown coal, by heatingthe pulverized or granulated coal rapidly to about 800‹ C. and then rapidly cooling the gas and coke. This may be done by passing the coal quickly through the reaction chamber with the assistance of gases such as superheated steam and cooling the products in an adjacent chamber. By passing a solid inert substance such as sand or metal fragments through the reaction chamber either with the coal, or separately therefrom the deposition of coal and coke may be prevented. Wet coal should be dried before use so as to avoid the water gas reaction. The tar obtained may be returned to the process either by injection into the reaction vessel or by impregnating pumice with the tar and feeding the pumice with the coal. Suitable apparatus comprises a vertical pipe 5 metres long and 50 m.m. in diameter constructed of nickel-chromiumiron alloy and heated externally by hot gases, or electrically to about 800‹ C., the powdered charge falling through this tube. The gases obtained include 19 per cent Cn H2n and homologues of ethylene which may be absorbed in active charcoal which, on subsequent treatment with steam, gives a colourless liquid containing amylene, benzine and the like and boils between 30‹ and 100‹ C. Hot sand introduced through a hopper A is further heated in a tube B by a furnace C and together with powdered brown coal from a hopper E is dropped through a heated tube D.
