Abstract

<PICT:0715478/III/1> The ash content of carbonaceous material such as coke or anthracite is reduced by treating the material with chlorine, a major portion of the material being heated to a temperature of at least 1400 DEG C. while maintaining a temperature gradient in the portions of the material adjacent the walls of the chamber containing the material so that the temperature of the material in contact with the walls of the chamber is substantially below 1400 DEG C. The duration of the treatment is from 3-12 hours depending on the chlorine rate and the required result. In an example the ash content of a coke on a number of rims was reduced on average from 10.0 per cent. to 1.2 per cent. after treatment for periods of between 8-12 hours. The treatment is preferably carried out continuously; the coke or anthracite is fed to the upper end of a chamber 10 which has heating electrodes 20 and 21 and inlet and outlet pipes 18 and 19 for the chlorine and effluent gases, the treated anthracite or coke being withdrawn from the bottom of the chamber. The coke or anthracite may be preheated or dried to reduce its moisture content to 0.5 per cent. before treatment. The residual chlorine in the treated product may be reduced, if desired, by a further treatment with hydrogen for 1-3 hours.
