Abstract

Producers. - Carbon dioxide and water vapour in gases containing them are converted into carbon monoxide and hydrogen by being heated by a high-tension electric arc and passed at a temperature of at least 1400‹ C. through a layer of incandescent coke or the like. The hot gases are introduced through a pipe d against the surface of the slope c of the coke which descends from a shaft a and the slag is tapped off through an outlet e. Liquid or gaseous carbonaceous material may be introduced into the chamber when the arc is burning and hot gases impinge on the coke at places where it is not in contact with the brickwork or lining.
