Abstract

<PICT:0953781/C3/1> A continuous process for the destructive distillation of coal comprises passing the coal progressively upwardly through a vertical treatment zone, introducing an oxygen-containing gas (air) into the coal at an intermediate location 42a to flow co-currently with the coal, establishing a combustion front 50 of limited vertical extent in the coal tending to move counter-current thereto, oxygen being consumed in the front to provide an oxygen-free zone behind the front through which the coal passes, directing hot gases, e.g. the products of combustion, through the coal leaving the front 50 to maintain distillation temperatures, removing evolved products (coal tar, coke-oven gases, combustion products) at 44 separately from the coke, and cooling the coke, e.g. by water quenching at 47, before discharge. The position of the front 50 is stabilized by regulating the input of air at 42 and by establishing a balance between the coal input and solids output. The temperature of the front 50 and the rate of coal feed, of coal movement, and of solids removal, may be automatically controlled. Recycled coke oven gas may be included in the air delivered, and the coal, which moves upwardly, may be preheated at 41, e.g. by recycled gas. The retort 34 is surrounded by an insulating chamber 40 having a water jacket 43. Rapid, intermittent charging takes place at the inlet 37 (see Division F4). In two further embodiments, coal passes downwardly and breakers, e.g. rolls, are included near the bottom of the retort, see Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), and the outlet corresponding to 44 has a baffle to prevent entry of solids. Temperatures of 1100 DEG F. to 2000 DEG F. are mentioned for the front 50, and gases flow away from the front to the outlet 44 by virtue of an exhaust pump in the outlet line or by making a high pressure in the bottom of the chamber 40 by suitably sealing the solids outlet.
