Abstract

692,325. Coking pitch etc.; vertical retorts. RUTGERSWERKE AKT.-GES. April 10, 1951 [May 8, 1950], No. 8269/51. Classes 51(ii), 55(i) and 55(ii) A two-stage continuous process for the coking of pitch and the like comprises first heating the pitch to render it viscous and to free it from most of its volatile matter and then coking the viscous material at a raised temperature, the material passing through both stages under the action of gravity. The apparatus consists of a vertical retort 2 surmounted by a distillation column 1. Preheated, molten pitch enters column 1 through a pipe 3 and flows downwardly over plates 4, the column being heated to 300‹- 500‹C by a jacket 5 supplied with hot combustion gases. The vapours from the pitch discharge through a pipe 11 whilst the viscous residue containing about 20 per cent volatile matter passes in the form of thin streams through a distributer 13 and falls through an empty coking chamber 14 which forms the top section of the retort 2, and which is heated to 1000‹C by a jacket 18 supplied with hot combustion gases. The pitch is coked as it passes through chamber 14 and collects in a calcining chamber 15 into which air is admitted through pipes 24, part of the coke being burnt to free the remainder from residual volatile mattter and to supply the hot combustion gases for the jackets 18 and 5. Additional heating gas and air may be supplied through pipe 19 and to ensure even heating, the gases enter and leave the jackets through annular channels 20, 22, 7 and 9 which are each provided with throttling strip, as shown at 29 in Fig. 2, the height of which decreases as the distance from the inlet or outlet pipe increases. The calcined coke finally passes into a water jacketed cooling chamber 16 and is continuously extracted from the retort by a worm 17.
