Abstract
800,812. Gas producers ; discharging molten residues. HOHLENSCHEIDUNGS-G.m.b.H. April 15, 1955, No. 10980/55. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). A method of controlling the continuous discharge of molten material from gas producers &c. utilizes means which creates a pressure, acting at the slag discharge opening mouth, which exceeds, and operates against, the gas pressure in the producer. In the producer shown, slag is discharged through an outlet 2, Fig. 1, into a water bath 26, and the resulting granulated material is moved to a conveyer 11, Fig. 2, by a conveyer 8 operating in a waterfilled trough 7. The bath 26 is in a pressure chamber 5 in which the pressure is kept, during producer operation, at a value higher than that of the gas in the producer. Variation in the slag level 3 or 3<SP>1</SP> is effected by varying the water head h1 in the slag disposal system. The space above the water in the chamber 5 is filled with steam, evolved, after an initial introduction of steam, through a valve-controlled opening 14 on starting up the producer, as the molten slag drops into the bath. Steam surplus to chamber pressurizing requirements is passed through a pipe 16 and spiral tube arrangements 22, 22<SP>1</SP>, 22<SP>11</SP>, to cool the hot gases leaving the producer through a duct 23. The steam, which passes from the arrangement 22<SP>11</SP> to the producer via a nozzle 25, is also used to heat the producer air supply in a duct 27<SP>1</SP>. Make-up water is fed to the chamber 5 and the slag disposal system through a valve-controlled main 17. In another producer, the slag passes from the chamber 5, Fig. 3, to a chamber 29, Fig. 5, at the top of which is an outlet for slag discharge on to the conveyer 11. The level of the outlet, which may be varied, determines the surface level of the slag in the producer. Prior to furnace operation, the chambers are heated by a gas flame introduced and withdrawn through pipes 32, 33, respectively, whilst on cessation of operation the plug is drained-off through hole 34. In applying the invention to a producer in which iron smelting is effected, the iron and slag may be discharged by means of the devices of Figs. 3, 5, and 1, 2, respectively.
