Abstract

1369595 Making steels I G NIXON 21 Sept 1971 [5 Oct 1970] 47231/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Molten metal is refined by blowing it with a decarburizing gas the composition of which is such that the gases leaving the vessel are reducing to wustite at the operating temperature. The vessel is operated as a closed system, the exhaust gases being cooled by a stream of quench gas and recovered through a conduit connected to the vessel through a gas-tight joint, the latter preferably being cooled directly by the quench stream, which may react endothermically with the exhaust gas. The feed gas may be a mixture of CO, CO 2 , H 2 and H 2 O, or a reaction mixture which generates those gases in the vessel, while the quench gas may be liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons, such as natural gas, naphtha or fuel oil, possibly mixed with CO 2 and/or H 2 O or H 2 . Quenching may be effected in two stages, the first to 1300‹ -1400‹ C and the second to 900‹ - 1100‹ C, and the gases may then be used to reduce metallic ores. The process may be operated continuously or batchwise. In one embodiment molten metal is introduced through conduit 2, and flows in countercurrent to a gas stream generated by oxy-fuel burner 16, the final product being tapped intermittently at 24. Further gas is produced by fuel-oxygen combustion from lances 17, 18, while a quench gas stream is introduced through line 6 and gas-tight joint 5, from which the effluent gas is also withdrawn.
