1,192,428. Producing Cr steels with low carbon contents. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A.G. Nov. 28, 1967 [Nov. 29, 1966], No. 54164/67. Heading C7D. Producing chromium alloy steels with a low carbon content, by refining liquid pig iron (e.g. steelmaking iron) in a top blown oxygen converter, with additions of scrap or alloy carriers containing non- oxidizeable alloying elements (e. g. Ni), to achieve a carbon content of at most 0À05% with an oxygen content of up to 0À06%, teeming the product into a ladle where it is vacuum decarburized while in rimming condition and then mixing the vacuum treated metal with liquid low carbon ferro chromium. During the oxygen blowing the P content is preferably reduced to no more than 0À015% and the S content to no more than 0À02%. Residual oxygen after the vacuum treatment may be removed by the addition of deoxidation agents and mixing of the final product may be enhanced by a short vacuum (e. g. vacuum suction) treatment.
