Abstract

1495723 Refining ferrous melts C B MURTON 18 Oct 1974 [5 Nov 1973] 45235/74 Heading C7D A ferrous melt is refined by introducing O 2 to form an 02-rich zone into which are introduced one or more oxides of elements which are present in the melt and which it is desired to retain in the melt. The oxides being introduced for a time sufficient to give a refined product having the required elements in the desired composition. The oxides may be of Fe, C, Mn, Si, P, S, Cr, Ti, Mo, Ni, V, B, Nb, Cu or mixtures thereof. The oxides, in particulate form, may be added with the O 2 -stream, or separately, entrained in a carrier gas, i.e. inert gas (CO 2 or Ar) or compressed air. The O 2 stream and carrier gas may be added through concentric tuyeres, and may be blown from above the melt, from the side or below the melt. In an example, a melt in a basic oxygen furnace is top-blown with O 2 containing oxides of Si and Mn. To produce a plain carbon steel, iron oxide (e.g. millscale, furnace dust) only may be added.
