Abstract

1343116 Refining iron or steel BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 28 May 1971 [10 June 1970] 28231/70 Heading C7D Refining is carried out in an induction furnace by introducing a reagent at one or more points at least 100 mm. below the surface of the bath and at least 100 mm. from the lining, the conditions being such that any oxygen or iron oxide included in or produced by the decarburising agent does not reach the surface of the bath or its interface with lining. The reagent is preferably introduced at nor less than half the depth of the bath while when the diameter: depth ratio of the bath is at least 1 the reagent may be introduced at a number of locations given by the next integer above the value of the ratio. Suitable reagents are a suspension of iron oxide in a carrier gas of argon, helium or nitrogen, or gaseous oxygen alone or mixed with one of those gases, the oxygen forming at least 50 per cent by volume.
