Abstract
1423754 Controller converter steelmaking PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP and AVRR 23 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1973] 19184/75 Divided out of 1423751 Heading C7D [Also in Divisions F3 and F4] Molten ferrous metal in a converter is blown below the surface with an oxygen-containing gas, while another stream of oxygen-containing gas is introduced above the bath level to react with the evolved carbon monoxide, the rate of injection of the second stream being controlled according the result of analyzing the exhaust gas stream for carbon monoxide content. In the particular embodiment described, oxygen, surrounded by a hydrocarbon shielding gas, is blown in through basal tuyeres 18 mounted in box 14, while the secondary oxidizing gas is blown in through auxiliary tuyeres 118. The selection of gases and duration of blowing is carried out by a computer receiving signals from an oxygen partial pressure sensor 30 and infrared gas analyzer 31.
