Abstract

1423753 Controlling converter steelmaking PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP and AVRR 23 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 19183/75 Divided out of 1423751 Heading C7D The carbon content of molten steel is adjusted by blowing an oxygen-containing gas into the bath from below the surface thereof, also injecting a carbon-containing material into the bath and adjusting the injection rates in accordance with the analysis of the exhaust gases. As particularly described, the oxygen-containing gas is supplied through the inner, and hydrocarbon gas through the outer, coaxial passages of one or more basal tuyeres mounted in box 14, the duration of injection, among many other features of the steelmaking process, being controlled by a computer which receives a signal from gas analyzers 30, 31. Preferred hydrocarbons are methane, propane or butane, while petrocarbons or coal fires may also be used.
