Abstract
Oxygen is blown in via the centre of a concentric tuyere, located below the surface of the molten metal, the outer annulus of the tuyers carrying propane. Process comprises (a) continuously measuring the flow of oxygen and propane; (b) continuously analysing the gas leaving the converter for CO, CO2, O2, H2 and H2O; (c) making continuous calculations of gas-flow out of converter, decarburisation speed of the iron, wt. of carbon consumed, wt. of O2 passing into the slag, and bath content of C, P and Si; (d) comparing the calculated values with pre-determined standards, chosen so that the correct steel compsn. and temp. is obtd. when the converter is tipped; and (e) rapidly altering the refining conditions (flow of O2, addns.) to eliminate any deviation between calcd. and standard values.
