Abstract
1316802 Producing ferromanganese by reduction UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 May 1970 [21 May 1969] 24366/70 Heading C7D Medium to low carbon Fe Mn is produced by calcining a particulate mixture comprising limestone, oxidic manganese ore containing less than 10% SiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 e.g. Mn O 2 and (anthracite) coal or coke, e.g. at 1300C in a rotating kiln 1, to provide a mixture of lime and partially reduced manganese ore containing oxygen no greater than in Mn 2 O 3 (e.g. as Mn O) in the solid state; introducing the solid mixture and iron and molten intermediate Si-Mn alloy (e.g. containing 4-20% Si) into an electric arc furnace 3 and supplying electrical energy to the furnace to reduce the ore with the intermediate alloy e.g. at 1500-1700C to produce the Fe Mn and a slag (e.g. containing 18- 40% Mn), which is separated e.g. in a ladle 5 to react with SiMn (e.g. containing 14-40% Si and 40- 80% Mn) to produce additional intermediate alloy. The slag produced from the ladle reaction may in turn react with quartz, Mn ore and carbon in furnace 7 to produce SiMn. The Fe Mn may consist of 75-95% Mn, 0À1-8% Si, 0À03-2À0%C, balance Fe.
