Abstract
The process of refining pig-iron in a tiltable converter whose lateral wall is provided at a lever under the surface of the metal bath when vertical with at least one nozzle comprising two coaxial tubes, comprises (1) tilting to the horizontal so that the nozzle(s) are above the bath level, and introducing a charge of molten pig-iron, scrap, and advantageously, lime (in pieces or powder) then (2) blowing on to the bath surface through the centre tube(s) a highly-oxidant gas which penetrates into the slag or underlying metal, the gas opt. contg powdered slag-forming agents, and at the same time injecting throught he peripheral tube(s) a fluid which protects the walls, the blowing being continued until most of the lime has dissolved in the slag, then (3) tilting to the vertical and blowing the two components through their respective tubes laterally directly into the metal. The final content of P is lower for the same amt of C than if stage (2) is omitted.
