Abstract

1,192,844. Bottom blowing. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. Sept. 16, 1968 [Sept. 19, 1967], No.43904/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4] Molten metal is refined by a process comprising charging the molten metal to an upright refining furnace having at least one main opening 4 in the bottom for blowing in oxygen and an auxiliary opening 6, surrounding the main opening, for blowing in a shielding gas. A block of porous refractory 9 is inserted in the main opening and the auxiliary opening may also be closed by a porous refractory plug. Commercial purity oxygen is blown through opening 4 and the shielding gas may be alcohol vapour, steam or carbon dioxide.
