Abstract

Steel is produced from scrap by melting a solid charge in a crucible 1 by a central burner 2 and additional burners 12 extending through an arched roof 6, the exhaust gases being taken off by a pipe 8. The melt is refined by the burner flame or by blowing oxygen through selected burners or separate oxygen nozzles (not shown). Finally the pipe 8 is removed and the crucible aperture 7 closed by a cover 61 through which pass electrodes 22 to effect de-oxidizing of the melt. Fig. 6 shows two furnaces 31, 32 both capable of emptying into a ladle car 33 on a track 34 and both utilizing the same electrodes 39 and burners 52. These can be swung from one furnace to the other on swivel frames 38, 41 respectively. Separate slag pots 35, 36 are provided. <PICT:1010645/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1010645/C6-C7/2> <PICT:1010645/C6-C7/3>
